Oxford in India
This bullock cart made by cutting the body of ‘FORD’ used by Jamnalalji Bajaj (Founder of Bajaj Groups of companies) as a transport vehicle for the muddy fields and unpaved roads to Sevagram of Wardha district, on which a regular car could not run. Sardar Patel jokingly named it ‘Oxford’.
Friends of Cow
On 10 November 1941, Jamnalalji shifted from his bungalow in wardha to his house in Gopuri, named Shanti Kutir (Peace Hut), to lead a life of simplicity, devoted to contemplation and service of the Cow. Personally tending the cows, bathing and cleaning them with own hands; he initiated the movement of preserving the cattle wealth of India personified in the Cow. Shanti Kutir was his residence till the end.
On February 11, 1942; death came suddenly and peacefully to Jamnalalji. He was 53 years old. Right upto the end he was at work attending to matters connected with Go-seva. Sardar Patel said, ‘Bapu lost a true son; Jankidevi and the family a true provider; the country a true worker; congress a palace pillar; the Cow lost a true friend; countless institutions lost their patron; and we all lost our beloved true brother.’
